Located in the Northern Pennines in Cumbria, at a height of 847m, Great Dun Fell has hosted a number of major international projects in the field of cloud aerosol interaction and cloud processing of aerosol. Many publications have resulted from work carried out at this site, a list of some of these publications can be found here. Currently the site is used for testing of cloud microphysical instruments, and for some long term measurements. The site is remote from highly populated areas, and as such experiences generally clean air masses. It's altitude and the local climate mean that the site is in cloud for approximately two thirds of the year, making ideal for cloud microphysics experiments. The local terrain also makes orographic hill cap cloud common at this site, and three site flow through cloud processing experiments have often been carried out here.

Facilities at the site include a lab, kitchen and toilet in the Civil Aviation radar building at the site, and a large wooden platform 5m high about 100m away from the building connected by a cable duct to the lab. Space is also available for other masts, trailers, and large items of equipment.

Great Dun Fell overlooks the Eden Valley, and is close to the towns of Penrith and Appleby in Westmorland. On a clear day, the Lake District can be seen beyond the Eden Valley. Here cloud can be seen above the Eden Valley during late afternoon in the Autumn.
